Burkina Faso military gets key posts in Cabinet

OUAGADOUGOU, Burkina Faso (AP) — Transitional leaders in Burkina Faso have agreed on a new, 25-member government to guide the country to elections next year, allocating several key Cabinet posts to the military.

The list was read out Sunday evening, less than one week after longtime diplomat Michel Kafando was officially sworn in as president. Kafando will also serve as minister of foreign affairs.

Former President Blaise Compaore, who held onto power for 27 years, resigned last month amid widespread protests against his bid to stay in office. Lt. Col. Isaac Yacouba Zida initially took control of the country, though he came under intense international pressure to restore civilian rule.

Zida will head the defense ministry, and army officers were also posted to the energy, territorial administration and sports ministries.
