WASHINGTON (AP) — Republican David Perdue has captured a hard-fought Senate race in Georgia, defeating Democrat Michelle Nunn. He will replace retiring Republican Saxby Chambliss.

Democrats had seen Nunn as one of their best hopes to thwart a GOP push for a majority.

Republicans are awaiting an additional Senate victory that could mean a Senate majority next year.

Republican candidates picked up Democratic seats in Colorado, Arkansas, Montana, West Virginia and South Dakota.

Boosted by voter discontent, Republicans are also moving toward a stronger grip on the House.

Republicans have won closely-watched governor's races in Wisconsin and Florida. Scott Walker turned back a stiff challenge in Wisconsin, while Gov. Rick Scott in Florida defeated former Republican Gov. Charlie Crist.

But in California, Gov. Jerry Brown has been elected to an unprecedented fourth term.
