DENVER (AP) — Republican Senate candidate Rep. Cory Gardner is taking the unusual step of contrasting his family with his opponent's in a new television ad.

In the ad, Gardner calls his opponent, Colorado Democratic Sen. Mark Udall, a "nice guy." But then he argues that Udall can't shake up Washington. Gardner notes that Udall's father ran for president and that Udall has two cousins in the Senate. Gardner notes his own father is a tractor salesman.

Democrats were furious and called for the spot to be taken off the air.

Udall does come from a famous political family. His late father was an Arizona congressman who ran for president. Cousins Tom Udall of New Mexico and Mike Lee of Utah are senators. Lee is a Republican.

Udall said Gardner's ad "was just low."
