(Reuters) - The U.S. Navy was searching for a missing pilot in the western Pacific Ocean on Saturday after the pilot's fighter jet crashed mid-air with another jet, the Navy said.

The two F/A-18 Hornet jets crashed west of the Wake Islands, about 2,300 miles (3,700 km) west of Hawaii at about 5:40 p.m. local time on Friday, according to a statement released by the Navy.

The other pilot involved in the collision was rescued and was in fair condition and receiving medical treatment aboard the USS Carl Vinson, according to the Navy.

The cause of the incident is under investigation, the Navy said.
