De Blasio vows to improve NYPD-community relations

NEW YORK (AP) — New York Mayor Bill de Blasio says more trust is needed between police and residents after a death in police custody.

De Blasio took office in January after making improving relations between the New York Police Department and minority communities a centerpiece of his campaign.

A black man died in police custody this month after being placed in an apparent chokehold by a white officer in an encounter caught on video. The death is under investigation.

De Blasio said at a news conference Monday that his administration is reaching out to those who feel upset. And he accepted responsibility for improving things.

He never mentioned former Mayor Michael Bloomberg by name but repeatedly referred to his three terms in office as a flashpoint for racial tensions surrounding the NYPD.
