NEW YORK (AP) — U.S. Ambassador Samantha Power and "Star Trek" star Zachary Quinto (KWIHN'-toh) are joining forces to promote gay rights in the U.S. and abroad.

The two spoke Thursday in New York at the 45th anniversary commemoration of the Stonewall Inn riots, which are credited with launching the modern gay rights movement in 1969.

Power, Quinto and gay rights activists note the progress the movement has made and challenges ahead, like workplace discrimination.

Power says the U.S. needs to serve as an example to nations that disregard gay rights, like Uganda, which criminalizes homosexuality.

The UN Human Rights Council adopted a resolution to acknowledge gay rights violations as human rights violations in 2011.

The ceremony is one of many events throughout June to celebrate LGBT Pride Month.
