LILONGWE (Reuters) - Malawian police on Friday fired tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse dozens of protesters demanding a recount of a May 20 vote that President Joyce Banda has said was fraudulent.

"Shops have been smashed, government offices closed and tires are still burning, but we have put the situation under control at the moment," police officer Elijah Kachikuwo told Reuters.

The High Court is due to decide on Friday whether the Malawi Electoral Commission should announce the result, which Banda's opponent is likely to have won, or if it should recount ballots, a process that could take two months.
