(Reuters) - Japanese pitcher Yu Darvish came within one out of throwing the first no-hitter of the Major League Baseball season as the Texas Rangers beat the Boston Red Sox 8-0 on Friday.
It was deja vu for Darvish, who last season came within one out of a perfect game against the Houston Astros.
The right hander seemed set for the rare feat when he retired Boston's Dustin Pedroia and Adrian Beltre in the ninth inning.
But David 'Big Papi' Ortiz then hit a ground ball into right field for a single to end the no-hit bid.
Darvish, who improved to 3-1 for the season, left the game with 12 strikeouts from 126 pitches.
