TRENTON, N.J. (AP) — New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie has put forth a former state attorney general to be the next chairman of the embattled transit agency that runs the bridge at the heart of the traffic jams scandal that has engulfed his administration.

Christie announced Tuesday that he's recommended John Degnan to replace David Samson, who resigned last month from the job at the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.

Degnan is a registered Democrat who served as attorney general from 1978 to 1981. Christie, a Republican, says he wanted someone with "unquestioned credentials." His nomination requires state Senate confirmation.

The Port Authority has been hit by several resignations since details emerged about the lane-closing scandal at the George Washington Bridge last fall.
