NEW YORK (AP) — New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio has delivered his first ceremonial pitch since taking office.

Clad in a Mets hat and personalized jersey, he lobbed a strike over the plate Monday to mark Opening Day against the Washington Nationals.

When introduced, the Democrat was largely booed by the crowd at Citi Field in Queens. But he received some mild cheers for his on-target pitch.

De Blasio grew up in Massachusetts. He's a fan of the Boston Red Sox, the archrival of the New York Yankees.

Before the Mets game, he said he'd also throw the first pitch at Yankee Stadium if asked. An invitation has not yet been offered.
