NEW YORK (AP) — A spokesman for New York Mayor Bill de Blasio (dih BLAH'-zee-oh) says the mayor called a top police official to ask about the recent arrest of a pastor who had endorsed him but the pastor had already been released.

The spokesman said Tuesday de Blasio called Deputy Chief Kim Royster late Monday and asked whether Bishop Orlando Findlayter had been arrested that night.

Royster is the commanding officer of the police department's press office. She says Findlayter had been pulled over Monday night for failing to signal. She says he had two open warrants from arrests at an October protest.

She says a Brooklyn commanding officer had issued Findlayter a desk appearance ticket and released him by the time the mayor called.

Findlayter can't be reached for comment by telephone.

The Wall Street Journal first reported the case.
