(Reuters) - A suspicious package tested positive for explosives at the Maxwell Air Force Base in Alabama on Friday, prompting officials to lock down part of the facility, an base spokesman said.
The package, about the size of a box of bank checks, was discovered Friday morning during a routine inspection at the base post office, he said.
Officials have closed an entrance to the base in Montgomery and have evacuated some buildings or asked people within the cordoned area to stay in place as a safety precaution.
Maxwell is home to more than 12,500 active-duty, reserve, civilian and contractor personnel, according to the base website.
