BEIJING (AP) — Relatives say Chinese authorities have refused to accept an application seeking medical parole for an imprisoned nephew of the blind Chinese activist Chen Guangcheng.
Ren Zongju, mother of Chen Kegui, said Friday that her 34-year-old son has been suffering from serious stomach pains in a prison in east China's Shandong province.
Ren says the prison rejected her application for her son to be released to seek medical treatment.
Ren says the prison insists Chen has no ailment although he was sweating and complaining of a persistent stomach pain when she visited him on Monday.
Chen was sentenced to prison in 2012 after he fought with local officials storming his house in the wake of his uncle's escape from house arrest. The family says Chen acted in self-defense.
