WASHINGTON (AP) — Tea party conservative Sens. Ted Cruz and Mike Lee are forcing the Senate to delay votes on a temporary spending bill over the objections of Democrats and Republicans.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid had proposed to move up the votes to Thursday, but Lee objected. The votes likely will occur on Friday.

In an unusual exchange, Republican Sen. Bob Corker asked if they favored a delay because they had emailed supporters to watch on Friday. Corker pressed Cruz on whether his goal was to turn the vote into a show.

Corker said the House needs more time to respond to the Senate-passed bill. Reid said stalling pushed the country closer to a government shutdown on Tuesday.
