JAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) — Two men riding a motorcycle fatally shot a police officer Tuesday in front of Indonesia's anti-graft commission.

National Police spokesman Maj. Gen. Ronny Frengky Sompie said police are investigating the motive for the attack in downtown Jakarta.

The victim, identified only as Sukardi, a detective who was also riding a motorbike, died instantly.

It was the third attack on police in and near the capital since August. Two officers were killed on Aug. 16, nine days after another was fatally shot. Both were in Tangerang Selatan on Jakarta's western outskirts. Police identified two attackers as suspected terrorists.

Indonesia, the world's most populous Muslim-majority nation, has been battling terrorists since the 2002 bombings in Bali by militants linked to Jemaah Islamiyah which killed 202 people, mostly foreign tourists.

However, recent attacks in the country have been carried out by individuals or small groups and have targeted security forces and locals, with less deadly results.
