Greek civil servants call 2-day strike next month

ATHENS, Greece (AP) — Greece civil servants' union is intensifying protests against planned mass job cuts and suspensions, and has called a two-day strike for next month.

The ADEDY umbrella group said Friday it would approach other major Greek unions to seek joint participation in the Sept. 18-19 walkout.

ADEDY is angry at the conservative-led government's plans to fire 15,000 public sector workers by the end of 2014, and suspend another 25,000 this year.

The cuts break a major taboo by ending public sector employees' century-old job safety guarantees. They are part of a harsh savings and reform program demanded by international creditors in exchange for vital rescue loans that have kept debt-crippled Greece solvent since 2010.

The austerity has plunged the economy into a crippling recession and sent unemployment to record highs.
