BEIJING (AP) — Chinese police say a man has gone on public stabbing spree in a southwestern city, killing four people and wounding 11. It is the latest in a string of apparently random stabbings in China.

The public security bureau in Chengdu said Monday on its microblog that the 41-year-old suspect began attacking fellow passengers on a bus Sunday night. He then exited and began attacking pedestrians. The attack continued until the man was shot and wounded by police.

Police said the man told them he'd had a financial dispute with family members and arrived in Chengdu on Sunday from his hometown of Jintang.

China has seen a number of mass stabbings in recent weeks attributed to grudges, social dislocation and mental illness.

Private gun ownership is virtually nonexistent in the country.
