VERBATIM: The drop came as Americans cited concerns about stubbornly high inflation and interest rates as well as fears that unemployment could rise. The University of Michigan’s consumer sentiment index dropped to 67.4 this month from a final reading of 77.2 in April. That is still about 14% higher than a year ago.

Biden administration to impose new tariffs on China imports

The Biden administration plans to impose major new tariffs on a range of imports from China. According to a U-S official familiar with the plan, new tariffs would be slapped on Chinese electric vehicles, semiconductors, solar equipment and medical supplies. China’s EVs present a problem for President Biden, who has pushed for electric vehicles in his climate agenda. But China’s low-priced vehicles could pose a threat to U-S manufacturing jobs. As the 2024 campaign wears on, both the president and Donald Trump are vowing to be tough on China.

Montana Senator Tester First Democrat To Co-Sponsor Laken Riley Act

Red-state Democrat Senator Jon Tester [D-MT] is taking some Republican-friendly positions as he aims to hold on to his seat this November. Tester on Thursday became the first Democrat to co-sponsor the Laken Riley act. It would require federal officials to arrest illegals who commit certain crimes until they can be deported. On Wednesday Tester used a committee hearing to confront Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin about the crisis at the southern border, something the senator called “unacceptable”.

How close do you feel to other people?
VERBATIM:  A new poll from the Pew Research Center asks that question and it reveals that 66% of the general population says they DO feel close to other Americans.  And religion is a determining factor.  Amongst people of faith, 73% say they feel close to others, compared to just 51% of people who are not religiously affiliated.  Older Americans, conservatives and Republicans are also more likely to feel close to others.
