WASHINGTON (AP) — The head of the National Republican Senatorial Committee says the organization will back Sen. Mike Enzi over challenger Liz Cheney in the campaign for the Republican nomination in Wyoming.
Sen. Jerry Moran of Kansas told reporters on Tuesday that, in his words, "our support will be there for Mike." He spoke just moments after Cheney announced that she would challenge the three-term incumbent in the GOP primary.
Moran also says that Republican senators are clearly behind their colleague.
His comments are a clear message to Cheney that she faces a fight from Senate Republicans over her decision to take on the incumbent.
Cheney's father is former Vice President Dick Cheney. He represented Wyoming in the House for 10 years, from 1979 to 1989.
