Democratic convention resumes in Charlotte

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — The Democratic National Convention has resumed in Charlotte, with the last night of speeches under way. The convention is expected to conclude with President Barack Obama accepting the Democratic nomination for president.

Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa gaveled the convention into order just after 5 p.m. Eastern time on Thursday. A group of North Carolina Democratic office holders kicked off the speeches before the call to order.

Speakers expected to address the convention include several celebrities who have endorsed Obama's re-election campaign, Sen. John Kerry of Massachusetts and Vice President Joe Biden.

Thursday's program is taking place at Time Warner Cable Arena, though convention organizers had originally scheduled the night's session for a 74,000-seat football stadium. Convention organizers moved the speech because of forecasts calling for rain and thunderstorms.
