Bill Clinton says election offers sharp contrast

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Former President Bill Clinton says the presidential election offers a sharp contrast between the Republican advocacy of a winner-take-all society and the Democratic vision of shared prosperity.

In excerpts from his prepared speech to the Democratic National Convention, Clinton asks what kind of society Americans want to live in — a Republican one where everybody is on their own or a Democratic one where everyone is in it together.

He says the Republican argument against President Barack Obama is that Republicans left him an economy in a mess and he ought to be fired because he hasn't finished cleaning it up. He says Obama has begun the long road to recovery and laid the foundation for a more well-balanced economy.

Clinton is the convention's closing speaker Wednesday night.
