BIG BACKING: Weight Watchers, Jenny Craig and other diet companies said Tuesday that they support New York City's proposed ban on super-sized sugary drinks.
THE BACKGROUND: New York City is proposing a ban of sugary drinks in servings larger than 16 ounces. Restaurants, movie theaters, sports arenas, food carts and delis wouldn't be allowed to sell the larger sizes.
WHY IT MATTERS: It gives the city support from well-known diet companies a week before the Board of Health is set to vote on the proposal. Critics see the proposal as government overreaching and question its effectiveness.
