Republicans are closely monitoring Hurricane Isaac and the potential ramifications for their convention in Tampa.

Concerns about the storm is more personal for Tennessee Rep. Marcia Blackburn. Her 87-year-old mother, Mary Jo, lives in Laurel, Miss., which is inland but still in the path of the hurricane.

"This morning I called her and she said, 'Tell me what time it is that you're going to speak today because I want to watch it on TV, but I've got to get down and get things started at the Red Cross,'" Blackburn said in an interview.

The evacuation shelter in Laurel, Miss., was planning to open at noon on Tuesday. Blackburn's mother has pitched in and done work for the Red Cross for 50 years.
