Clinton sees progress in dispute with Egypt

Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton says the United States is close to resolving a dispute with Egypt over its crackdown on pro-democracy groups that has led to charges against 16 Americans.

Clinton told a Senate Appropriations subcommittee that the United States is engaged in intensive discussions with Egypt. She declined to give specifics publicly that might jeopardize a potential resolution.

The United States has threatened to cut off aid to Egypt over the crackdown on the nonprofit groups, putting at risk $1.3 billion in military aid this year and another $250 million in economic assistance.

Seven of the 16 Americans have been banned from leaving Egypt. Among them is Sam LaHood, son of Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood.
