Texas asks Supreme Court to halt redistricting

Texas is asking the Supreme Court to stop federal judges from redrawing its congressional districts for next year's elections.

The state attorney general, Greg Abbott, asked the high court to prevent the use of congressional boundaries drawn by a three-judge panel in Texas. He made a similar request earlier this week, asking to halt the use of the panel's state House and Senate lines.

It was not immediately known when a decision would be made by the Supreme Court.

The interim court-drawn map is scheduled to be used for the 2012 elections, filing for which began on Monday. The new map was drafted after minority groups challenged the original plan passed by the Republican-dominated state Legislature.

Abbott said in court papers the San Antonio-based court is overstepping its authority.
