Atlanta voters have overwhelmingly approved Sunday alcohol sales, clearing the way for shoppers to be able to buy liquor as soon as New Year's Day in stores.
Fulton County Board of Elections spokesman Mark Henderson says unofficial results show the measure has passed 81 percent to 19 percent with 93 percent of precincts reporting.
Voters in nearly 100 Georgia cities weighed in Tuesday on whether to lift a longstanding ban on Sunday sales. Several gave it the go-ahead.
The issue was not on the ballot statewide. The Legislature reversed a longstanding stalemate on the matter this year, clearing the way for communities to decide on their own whether they wanted to sell alcohol on Sundays.
Only two states _ Indiana and Connecticut _ now prohibit Sunday package alcohol sales.
