Santorum raises $582,000 for White House bid

Former Sen. Rick Santorum raised $582,000 for his Republican presidential bid and has less than a quarter million dollars banked heading into next month's crucial straw poll in Ames, Iowa.

The Pennsylvania politician told the Federal Election Commission on Friday that he spent roughly $353,000 for a campaign that is making a hard pitch to the GOP's conservative base. The campaign is not carrying any debt.

Santorum, who was eyeing a White House bid when he lost his 2006 re-election bid for the Senate, was once the No. 3 Republican in the Senate. Despite spending almost $26 million in that re-election race, he lost by 18 percentage points to Bob Casey.

Santorum has made frequent visits to early nominating states but has not gained in the polls.
