Afghan withdrawal no rush to the exit: Undersecretary of Defense

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Barack Obama's decision to withdraw more than 30,000 U.S. troops from Afghanistan by the end of next summer is no "rush to the exits" and is fully consistent with U.S. war strategy, Undersecretary of Defense Michele Flournoy said on Thursday.

"This announcement in no way marks a change in American policy or strategy in Afghanistan," Flournoy said in prepared remarks for the House of Representatives Armed Services Committee.

She said after the withdrawal of more than 30,000 surge forces from Afghanistan, the U.S. will still have 68,000 service members in the country. "Clearly, this is not a 'rush to the exits' that will jeopardize our security gains," she said.
