U.S. should keep troops in Iraq if asked: Panetta

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The United States should keep U.S. troops in Iraq beyond an end-2011 deadline for them to withdraw if Baghdad asks, the nominee to become the next defense secretary told Congress on Thursday.

Asked whether it would be smart to provide troops in 2012, if Iraq requested, CIA chief Leon Panetta said: "Yes." His comments came during a Senate hearing weighing his nomination to take over the Pentagon.
