U.S. presses Yemen to start democratic transition now

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The United States said on Monday that Yemen's civilian government should move ahead with a democratic transition while Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh is receiving medical treatment in Saudi Arabia.

"(Saleh) is in Saudi Arabia receiving medical treatment. There is a civilian government that remains in place in Yemen. We believe that the time is now to begin that peaceful transition toward a democratic process," State Department spokesman Mark Toner told a news briefing.
