Mitch McConnell says Medicare will be part of deficit deal

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell said Friday that the Medicare healthcare program will be part of any bipartisan agreement to reduce the U.S. deficit and increase the debt limit.

"Medicare will be part of the solution," McConnell told reporters, rejecting suggestion that his party may back off Medicare after it became an issue that hurt them in a New York election this week. Polls show broad public opposition to a House Republican plan to privatize Medicare.
