The State Department is appointing a spokeswoman to replace P.J. Crowley, who resigned after criticizing the treatment of Pvt. Bradley Manning, the WikiLeaks suspect who is in custody.
The department said in a statement Thursday that Victoria Nuland, a career diplomat and former ambassador to NATO, will speak from the podium at its daily press briefings.
Nuland most recently had been a senior official in the department's bureau of arms control, verification and compliance.
