Republicans would give time to seal a deal: aide

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Senate Republicans would allow a vote on a short-term funding bill to avert a federal shutdown -- if a bipartisan deal is reached on Friday to fund the government for the rest of this fiscal year, a senior Republican aide said.

The aide said Republicans would clear the way for such a stopgap funding measure to permit enough time, perhaps a few days, for a deal to be passed by Congress and sent to President Barack Obama to sign into law.

"No one wants to a shutdown," the aide said as Democratic and Republican negotiators raced the clock to get an agreement before a midnight deadline.
