WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Republicans and Democrats remain at odds over proposed cuts to defense and security spending in a budget deal that would keep the government running beyond midnight on Friday, a Republican aide said.

Democrats want roughly $2 billion in a spending cut package of between $33 billion and $40 billion to come from defense and security. Republicans say that's a nonstarter with their members.
