U.S. names veteran diplomat as new Sudan envoy

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Veteran diplomat Princeton Lyman was named the new U.S. special envoy for Sudan on Thursday as Washington seeks to bolster a shaky transition to independence for the oil-rich south of the country.

President Barack Obama named Lyman to the post, vacant since February when former envoy General Scott Gration stepped down to become the Obama administration's nominee as ambassador to Kenya.
