WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Energy Secretary Steven Chu said on Tuesday that U.S. equipment will arrive in Japan in two hours to help monitor radiation levels that have increased after failures at three of the country's nuclear reactors.
Chu also told a House Appropriations subcommittee that America will learn from the tragedy in Japan whether safety improvements are needed at U.S. nuclear power plants. He said the Obama administration was still committed to having nuclear power help meet America's electricity needs. "The United States needs a diverse supply of energy," he said.
