Recent federal civilian and military executions

Since the resumption of capital punishment in 1977 after a roughly 10-year hiatus, only three men have been put to death by the federal government, all for murder and all in the civilian justice system. The last military execution was in 1961.

CIVILIAN

_Timothy McVeigh, executed by lethal injection in June 2001 for killing 168 people in the bombing of the federal building in Oklahoma City.

_Juan Garza, executed by lethal injection in June 2001 for murders stemming from drug trafficking.

_Louis Jones Jr., executed by lethal injection in March 2003 for murdering an Army private, whom he also raped.

MILITARY

Pvt. John A. Bennett of Virginia, hanged in April 1961 after being convicted of rape and attempted murder.
