Chavez's illness poses potential pitfalls for foes

Opponents of Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez now face a different political playing field after the announcement by their nemesis that he is being treated for cancer.

Venezuela's opposition factions insist they are sticking with plans to stand behind a single candidate in next year's presidential election. But analysts say long-standing divisions might emerge within the opposition due to the situation.

Opposition politician Oswaldo Alvarez Paz says he hopes Chavez's political rivals will remain unified but also says he dreads the possibility of a fracture.

Chavez is in Cuba recovering after surgery to remove a cancerous tumor. Vice President Elias Jaua said Saturday that Chavez is "getting better to keep on leading us."
