A Venezuelan government official says one person has died of swine flu and six others have been diagnosed with the virus.
Information Minister Andres Izarra says the swine flu cases have been detected in the southwestern state of Merida.
He said on Twitter Thursday that health officials are taking measures to prevent the illness from spreading further.
It's unclear when the person died or how the outbreak began.
Venezuelan health authorities in 2009 attributed dozens of deaths to swine flu and said hundreds of other people were diagnosed.
