BUCHAREST, Romania (AP) — Romania's government says it plans to buy a famous sculpture by Constantin Brancusi that is considered one of the country's finest modern art works and was confiscated in the 1950s by communist authorities.
Culture Minister Vlad Alexandrescu said Thursday the government will pay 5 million euros ($5.65 million) of the 11 million-euro price for "Wisdom of the Earth." It will ask the public to donate the rest.
Alexandrescu said the purchase "is in the interest of art and culture." The limestone statue created in 1907 or 1908 depicts a woman sitting with folded arms and her legs pulled up.
It was confiscated in 1957 and became the center of a prolonged legal dispute after communism ended. In 2008, it was returned to the family of its original owner.
