EAST HAMPTON, N.Y. (AP) — Police say a New York City filmmaker who wrote, directed and starred in a 2005 movie featuring Natalie Portman has died in a car crash.

Officials say 34-year-old Nicholas J. Louvel crashed early Thursday on Route 114 in East Hampton. Investigators say he crossed traffic lanes and crashed into some trees.

Louvel was airlifted to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. His car was impounded for a safety check.

Newsday (http://nwsdy.li/1LQdl2x ) reports that Louvel's documentary, "The Uncondemned," was scheduled to be screened at next month's Hamptons International Film Festival. A website for the film says it "examines the first trial that prosecuted rape as a war crime and an act of genocide."

He starred with Portman in his low-budget film "Domino One." He also was involved in other movies.
