Kristin Hannah says novel 'The Nightingale' is her favorite

NEW YORK (AP) — Kristin Hannah says her new novel, "The Nightingale," is her favorite book she's written.

That's a bold statement since she's had a number of best-sellers, including "Firefly Lane," ''Home Front" and "True Colors."

"That always gets me in trouble with readers who have other favorites, but this is my personal favorite," Hannah said in a recent interview.

"The Nightingale," published by St. Martin's Press, is the story of two sisters in France, set against the backdrop of World War II and the French Resistance.

Hannah said it's different from her previous work because it's "primarily a historical fiction novel."

"What I'm known for are previous books about ordinary women surviving and dealing with extraordinary circumstances primarily during a contemporary setting," she said.

TriStar Pictures has optioned the film rights, and Hannah believes that taking the tale of women during wartime to the big screen would fill a void.

"First of all, I'm a huge movie buff and I love war movies in general," she said. "The idea that we could watch an epic war movie that was anchored by female characters and female issues and female choices, I just think it's kind of a game changer."

Her contemporary novel "Home Front," about a female Blackhawk pilot who comes home from deployment with post-traumatic stress disorder, is also in development for a film adaptation.

And Hannah is "deep into a first draft" of her next novel.

"The thing is I love to write. I really do love to write, I'm a huge reader. I love to go forth and find these characters and it's primarily for my own entertainment," she says.
