Broadway's 'A Gentleman's Guide to Love & Murder' cheering

NEW YORK (AP) — It won a best new musical Tony Award and played more than 570 performances, yet one thing has eluded the Broadway show "A Gentleman's Guide to Love & Murder" until now — profitability.

Producer Joey Parnes said Monday that his romp of a musical has finally recouped its entire $7.5 million capitalization. In an indication of how hard it is to make a profit, the show opened in November 2013 and has earned more than $51 million.

Though it had a slow start, the musical puffed along. It features a book by Robert L. Freedman, music by Steven Lutvak, and wry lyrics by Freedman and Lutvak.

It beat out "Aladdin," ''After Midnight" and "Beautiful — The Carole King Musical" for best new musical Tony last year.
