Monumenta exhibit goes minimalist

The Monumenta exhibit 2012 will swing its doors open to the public Thursday, as French contemporary artist Daniel Buren brings the Grand Palais' lofty, glass ceiling for the first time _ literally _ down to earth.

Monumenta, the annual art project, dares an artist of international stature to "move into" the nave of one of Paris' most monumental buildings, and own it.

With a space about 45 meters (150 feet) high, it's a dizzying feat for any artist, but especially for Buren who's a minimal artist.

Buren's attempt for 2012 sees myriad colored circles installed horizontally like a second human-scale roof, 2.5 meters (eight feet) high. Buren used the world's most abundant medium to fill the space: light.
