LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Oscar organizers on Tuesday said they had picked comedian Eddie Murphy to host the Academy Awards in February next year.
"Eddie is a comedic genius, one of the greatest and most influential live performers ever," the show's co-producer Brett Ratner said in a statement.
"With his love of movies, history of crafting unforgettable characters and his iconic performances -- especially on stage -- I know he will bring excitement, spontaneity and tremendous heart to the show Don (co-producer Don Mischer) and I want to produce in February."
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences said it would be Murphy's first stint hosting the Oscar ceremony.
