An architect with a work in the permanent collection of a New York City museum has died weeks after being robbed and beaten on Manhattan's Upper West Side.
Gerald Abramovitz, who was 82, died Thursday. Born in South Africa, he designed a cantilever desk lamp now in the Museum of Modern Art.
Police say he was attacked on May 25 in the vestibule of a friend's apartment building. Police say while waiting to be buzzed in Abramovitz was struck in the back of the head. The robber went through his wallet and then fled. He remains at large.
Abramovitz was treated at a hospital and released.
Police say two days later he became dizzy and returned to the hospital. Tests showed he had bleeding on his brain.
