W.Va. Film Office offers whitewater on demand

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the West Virginia Film Office are teaming up to provide filmmakers a whitewater river on demand.

Called River on Demand, the service allows filmmakers to take advantage of controlled releases from the Summersville Dam to create photogenic whitewater on the Gauley River. Water releases are timed with the corps' annual drawdown of the lake in the fall.

Corps senior water management specialist Jim Schray says since the releases are occurring any way, film producers can request specific times to accommodate their schedules.

The project is one of the Film Office's Signature Locations for filming in West Virginia. Other signature locales are the former Moundsville state prison and the New Vrindaban community's shiny mountaintop Palace of Gold.
