A 17th-century play with an unusually critical take on men has sold at auction for 84,000 pounds ($140,000).

Bonhams auction house says their staff uncovered a manuscript titled "Amazon" written by a close friend of leading 17th-century English poet John Donne in a trunk at Powis Castle in Wales.

Bonhams spokesman Julian Roup says Lord Edward Herbert's play had a strong feminist theme.

The manuscript came to light after the castle's owner Edward Powis asked Bonhams to sort through and value some of his manuscripts.

Bonhams research found that the play had been due to be performed before King James I and his court on New Year's Day in 1618, but it was canceled. It was sold to an unidentified buyer Tuesday.
