Stocks closed slightly lower on Tuesday after another bumpy day. Major indexes wavered between gains and losses for most of the day Tuesday, then ended barely in the red. Energy companies once again suffered the biggest losses as the price of oil took another tumble.
The Dow Jones industrial average fell 12.67 points, or 0.1 percent, to 16,014.38.
The Standard & Poor's 500 index lost 1.23 points, or 0.1 percent, to 1,852.21.
The Nasdaq composite index slid 14.99 points, or 0.4 percent, to 4,268.76.
For the week:
The Dow is down 190.59 points, or 1.2 percent.
The S&P 500 is down 27.84 points, or 1.5 percent.
The Nasdaq is down 94.38 points, or 2.2 percent.
For the year:
The Dow is down 1,410.65 points, or 8.1 percent.
The S&P 500 is down 191.73 points, or 9.4 percent.
The Nasdaq is down 738.65 points, or 14.8 percent.
