NEW YORK (AP) — U.S. stocks posted modest gains Thursday as investors await Friday's closely watched jobs report, which could offer insight about the U.S. economy and help determine whether the Federal Reserve raises interest rates again next month.
The Dow Jones industrial average added 79.92 points, or 0.5 percent, to 16,416.58.
The Standard & Poor's 500 index rose 2.92 points, or 0.2 percent, to 1,915.45.
The Nasdaq composite index rose 5.32 points, or 0.1 percent, to 4,509.56.

The Dow is down 49.72 points, or 0.3 percent.
The S&P 500 has lost 24.79 points, or 1.3 percent.
The Nasdaq is down 104.39 points, or 2.3 percent.
For the year:
The Dow is down 1,008.45 points, or 5.8 percent.
The S&P 500 is down 128.49 points, or 6.3 percent.
The Nasdaq is down 497.85 points, or 9.9 percent.
